ServiceNow does not offer a single CIS exam. Implementation Specialist certifications are issued per product, and each has its own blueprint, question count, and domains. Before choosing, check the prerequisite rule: seven certifications, including CIS-ITSM, now require passing CIS-Data Foundations (CMDB and CSDM) first, and existing holders must earn it by December 31, 2026 or those certifications expire. CIS-CSM is not on that list. Then match the blueprint to your work: internal incident, problem, change, and catalog implementations point to CIS-ITSM; customer case and portal work points to CIS-CSM; CMDB and CSDM design points to Data Foundations itself.

What the CIS family actually is

CIS stands for Certified Implementation Specialist, and ServiceNow issues it per product rather than as one exam. Each version is a proctored mainline certification.

ServiceNow groups its credentials into mainline certifications, accreditations, micro-certifications, and expert programs. Mainline certifications are earned through a proctored exam on the platform or a product, and Implementation Specialist is one mainline track offered for individual products and applications rather than as a single credential.

CIS-ITSM, CIS-CSM and CIS-Data Foundations are separate exams with separate blueprints. They are the three examples compared here. Confirm the exact product certification you intend to take and read its own current blueprint.

Micro-certifications cover narrower specialty topics through non-proctored knowledge checks or practical assessments. They normally have no expiry, but added requirements must be completed to remain valid. Mainline CIS credentials have their own maintenance requirements.

Check the Data Foundations prerequisite first

Seven CIS certifications, including CIS-ITSM, now require the CIS-Data Foundations (CMDB and CSDM) certification first. Existing holders of those seven must earn it by December 31, 2026 or the dependent certifications expire.

ServiceNow requires the CIS-Data Foundations (CMDB and CSDM) certification before seven implementation specialist certifications in the ITAM, ITOM, ITSM, and SecOps domains: Discovery, Hardware Asset Management, IT Service Management, Service Mapping, Security Incident Response, Software Asset Management, and Vulnerability Response. The stated reason is that these implementations depend on accurate CMDB structuring and alignment with the Common Service Data Model (CSDM), ServiceNow's framework for organizing configuration and service data.

If you are starting one of those seven paths, you must pass Data Foundations before you can register or schedule the downstream exam. If you already hold one of the seven, you have until December 31, 2026 to earn Data Foundations; otherwise the certification expires, and regaining it later requires passing both Data Foundations and the product exam again. A booking made for 2027 does not protect an existing certification past that date.

A current first-attempt offer is tied to this rule. Candidates who already hold one or more of the seven affected certifications can register for the Data Foundations exam at no cost, first attempt only, if they register on or before December 31, 2026. Older relief measures, including the all-candidate free offer that ended June 30, 2026 and the temporary prerequisite suspension that ended January 31, 2026, are historical and no longer available.

Scope matters here. Customer Service Management is not on the seven-certification list, so CIS-CSM has no Data Foundations prerequisite in the current published policy. ServiceNow has also removed the requirement to complete the matching training course before taking any certification exam; courses remain recommended but not mandatory if you already have the knowledge.

  • New candidates for the seven affected exams: pass CIS-Data Foundations before registering or scheduling them
  • Existing holders of the seven: earn CIS-Data Foundations by December 31, 2026 to avoid expiration
  • Free first-attempt Data Foundations registration for existing holders runs through December 31, 2026
  • CIS-CSM is outside this seven-certification requirement; check the current blueprint for any other target credential.

Logistics shared across the CIS exams

The representative CIS blueprints share the same delivery and results model: Pearson test centers or online proctoring, a 90-day registration window, a conditional on-screen result, and annual maintenance.

After you register, you have 90 days to schedule and complete your exam, and exam fees are non-refundable, so register only when you are ready to book a slot. ServiceNow provides reasonable accommodations for candidates with disabilities or English as a second language. Delivery is through Pearson: at a test center or online via OnVUE, where a proctor observes through your webcam.

Results appear immediately on screen as a conditional pass or fail, meaning the result is preliminary and subject to audit; a confirmed policy violation can lead to revocation. Each question is worth one point, and your total is compared to a cut score that ServiceNow does not publish and which is not always 70 percent. The per-domain percentages on your result report show where you were stronger but must not be averaged to predict or reconstruct the outcome.

Passing earns the certification and a Credly digital badge. Maintaining it requires annual maintenance exams, called deltas, which keep skills current between releases, plus the yearly Certification Maintenance Program fee. If you fail, the blueprint directs you back to its recommended training before retaking, and the retake policy requires a waiting period between attempts plus a fee per attempt; the Credentialing Program Guide holds the full retake details.

Three representative blueprints compared

CIS-ITSM and CIS-CSM each run 60 questions in 90 minutes; Data Foundations runs 75 questions in 90 minutes and adds drag-and-drop and scenario items. Domain weights differ sharply between them.

The table below condenses the published exam scopes. Blueprint subtopic lists are expressly not all-inclusive, so treat the domains as the reliable skeleton and the subtopics as examples. Exam questions draw on official ServiceNow training materials, the product documentation site, and the developer site.

CIS-ITSM, updated January 2026, validates configuring and maintaining incident, problem, and change management, service catalog and request management, and CMDB integration. It carries the Data Foundations prerequisite described above. Its recommended experience is six months of general platform exposure and six months of implementation experience, framed as recommendations for the intended audience.

CIS-CSM, updated November 2025, validates data models, case routing, case processes, and CSM workspaces, portals, and analytics. Its intended audience describes practical experience implementing or maintaining CSM and knowledge of customer service processes; it sits outside the prerequisite list. CIS-Data Foundations validates designing and operating a CMDB that supports the CSDM framework. Its list of recommended experience includes the Certified System Administrator certification and two or more years of CMDB work, but the blueprint frames these as recommendations, not registration blockers.

Worked scenario: choose the exam and apply the prerequisite

An internal ITSM rollout maps to CIS-ITSM and requires Data Foundations first; a customer support rollout maps to CIS-CSM, which has no Data Foundations prerequisite.

The exercise below is an original practice decision, not a retrieved exam question. Every assumption is stated so the answer follows from the published rules, and it rehearses both choices this guide covers: picking the product exam and checking the prerequisite.

Practice scenario

You are a consultant with two new engagements. Assumptions: you hold no ServiceNow certifications yet; the current Data Foundations prerequisite policy and the January 2026 ITSM and November 2025 CSM blueprints are in force. Engagement A asks you to configure incident, problem, and change management with a service catalog for a company's internal IT department. Engagement B asks you to implement case routing, case types, and customer portals for a client's external support center. For each engagement, state which CIS certification fits the work and whether Data Foundations must be completed before registering or scheduling that exam.

Show the answer

Engagement A maps to the CIS - IT Service Management certification, because its blueprint covers incident, problem, and change lifecycles plus service catalog and request management. Because ITSM is one of the seven certifications that require Data Foundations, and you hold no certifications, you must pass CIS-Data Foundations (CMDB and CSDM) before you can register or schedule the ITSM exam. Engagement B maps to the CIS - Customer Service Management certification, whose blueprint covers case routing, case types, channels, and portals. CSM is not on the prerequisite list, so you could register for the CSM exam without earning Data Foundations first.

The two decisions use different evidence. Exam choice comes from the blueprints: internal incident, problem, change, and catalog work matches the ITSM domains, while customer-facing cases and portals match the CSM domains. The prerequisite step comes from the prerequisite policy, which lists exactly seven affected certifications including ITSM but not CSM. An incorrect answer would apply Data Foundations to both paths; the policy scopes the requirement to the published list, so adding CSM to it overstates the rule. The reverse mistake, scheduling ITSM directly, would fail because a new candidate cannot even register for a dependent exam before holding Data Foundations.

Preparation that maps to the blueprints

Study from ServiceNow's official training, product documentation, and developer site, and use the recommended course list in your exam's blueprint. Unofficial materials posted elsewhere are not official and should not be used.

Each blueprint names recommended courses. For ITSM these include the administration fundamentals and advanced courses, Platform Implementation, CMDB Fundamentals, and the ITSM Fundamentals and Implementation courses. For CSM they include Customer Service Management Essentials and its simulator plus implementation best practices. For Data Foundations they include CMDB Fundamentals, CSDM Fundamentals, CMDB Health content, and configuration simulators. Course completion is no longer mandatory for any of these exams, but the blueprints still recommend it.

Official practice exams are available through ServiceNow's partner MeasureUp for CSM and Data Foundations, with access instructions in Knowledge Article KB0013408. Because blueprint subtopics are nonexhaustive, use the weights and your own weak areas to plan review: for example, change management and catalog together make up half the ITSM exam, configuration alone is 38 percent of CSM, and Govern is the largest Data Foundations domain at 35 percent.

A practical sequence: read your target blueprint first, confirm whether Data Foundations gates your path, then plan study time using both domain weights and your current skill gaps. Read the Credentialing Program Guide for retake rules and maintenance requirements before you register, since registration starts a non-refundable 90-day window to schedule and complete the exam.

  • Read your target blueprint and the Credentialing Program Guide before registering
  • Confirm whether your certification is one of the seven gated by Data Foundations
  • Use domain weights and your own knowledge gaps to allocate study time.
  • Use official training, product documentation, the developer site, and MeasureUp practice exams where offered

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Practical answers to help you apply the guidance for ServiceNow Certified Implementation Specialist (CIS) Families.

Is there a single ServiceNow CIS exam?
No. Implementation Specialist certifications are issued per product or application, each with its own proctored blueprint. This guide verifies logistics for three of them: CIS-ITSM, CIS-CSM, and CIS-Data Foundations.
What happens if I already hold CIS-ITSM but not Data Foundations?
You must earn CIS-Data Foundations by December 31, 2026, or your ITSM certification expires. A free first-attempt registration offer is available to existing holders of the seven affected certifications through that date, but scheduling must still happen within the normal 90-day registration window.
What score do I need to pass?
ServiceNow compares your score to a cut score it does not publish, and it is not always 70 percent. Domain percentages on your result report show per-section performance but do not determine the outcome and should not be averaged.
Do I have to complete the training course before taking a CIS exam?
Training courses are recommended rather than mandatory. This does not remove certification prerequisites: the seven affected CIS exams still require Data Foundations first. Use your target blueprint to check both the required credential and the recommended preparation.
How do I keep the certification after passing?
Complete the required annual delta maintenance and pay any applicable CMP fee. Existing holders of the seven affected CIS credentials must also earn Data Foundations by December 31, 2026. Check the current maintenance instructions in ServiceNow University.
