The ServiceNow CSA exam has 60 questions in 90 minutes across six weighted domains, delivered at a Pearson test center or online through OnVUE. Registration starts a 90-day window to schedule and complete the exam. The cut score is not published, so ignore any fixed pass percentage. Prepare from official ServiceNow training and Product documentation, and allocate study time by the domain weights: Database Management and Platform Security carries 30 percent, the largest share.
What the CSA credential covers
The ServiceNow Certified System Administrator exam confirms you can configure, implement, and maintain a ServiceNow instance, from navigation and application configuration through data management and automation.
According to the exam specification updated January 2026, the credential validates the ability to navigate the platform, configure applications, manage databases, and implement self-service and automation. Certified individuals also handle data migration, integrations, and customizations that keep ServiceNow operations running efficiently.
The exam is open to ServiceNow customers, partners, employees, and anyone else interested in the certification. There is no formal application gate described in the specification; instead, the issuer lists recommended experience: three to six months using or maintaining a ServiceNow instance, familiarity with database concepts and system administration, and some knowledge of IT Help Desk processes such as incident, problem, and change workflows. Treat these as preparation benchmarks, not eligibility requirements.
One preparation warning comes straight from the issuer: exam questions are based on official ServiceNow training materials and Product documentation, and study materials posted elsewhere online are not official. Build your plan around ServiceNow's own sources.

- The instructor-led Fundamentals completion includes one free exam attempt; this does not generalize to all training formats.
Exam format, delivery, and registration
The exam has 60 questions and lasts 90 minutes. It mixes single-answer multiple choice with multiple-select questions, and you take it at a Pearson test center or online through OnVUE.
Each multiple-choice question offers at least three possible responses, and you pick the correct one. Multiple-select questions offer at least four responses, the question states how many to select, and you must pick all correct ones — partial credit is not provided. That rule changes how you answer: on a select-two question, a confident pick plus a guess can still score zero for the item.
Delivery runs through Pearson from your My Exams page. You choose a Pearson test center or the online OnVUE option, where a proctor observes through a webcam. ServiceNow provides reasonable accommodation for candidates with disabilities or English as a Second Language.
Registration works in steps, and the timing matters. Registration equals payment and secures your attempt; learning credits and card payments are accepted. After registering, you have 90 days to schedule and complete the exam. If the 90 days lapse, the registration expires and you pay the full fee again. Fees are non-refundable, so register only when you are ready to book an appointment.
The six exam domains and their weights
Use all six domains as a coverage checklist. Database Management and Platform Security has the largest weight; review your weaker topics alongside the published weighting.
The specification lists the domains, weightings, and sub-topics, and explicitly notes that the listed sub-skills are not an all-inclusive list of exam content. Use the table as a coverage map, then go deeper through official Product documentation for each subtopic you study.
| Domain | Weight | Representative subtopics |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Platform Overview and Navigation | 7% | Platform overview, capabilities and services, the ServiceNow instance, Next Experience unified navigation |
| 2. Instance Configuration | 10% | Installing applications and plugins, personalizing the instance, common user interfaces |
| 3. Configuring Applications for Collaboration | 20% | Lists, filters, and tags; form configuration and templates; task management; Visual Task Boards; dashboards and Platform Analytics; notifications |
| 4. Self-Service & Automation | 20% | Knowledge Management, Service Catalog, Workflow Studio, Virtual Agent |
| 5. Database Management and Platform Security | 30% | Data schema, application and access control, importing data, CMDB and CSDM, Security Center, shared responsibility model |
| 6. Data Migration and Integration | 13% | UI Policies, Business Rules, system update sets, scripting |
How scoring works
Each question is worth one point, and the total is compared with ServiceNow’s unpublished cut score. The result displayed after testing is conditional until final review.
ServiceNow does not publish a fixed cut score, and the specification says it is not always 70 percent. The domain percentages on a result report show performance within each domain; simply averaging them does not produce the overall result. Use those figures to locate areas for review, without treating them as an official readiness score.
The displayed pass or fail is conditional, meaning results are preliminary and may be updated on final review, and the exam can be audited; certification can be revoked if test security policies were violated. A result report also shows your per-section performance, which is useful for planning a retake.
Maintaining the credential and retaking
Passing earns the certification and a Credly digital badge. Keeping it requires annual maintenance exams (deltas) and the yearly Certification Maintenance Program fee; retakes carry a waiting period and a new fee.
If you do not pass, the issuer's own guidance is to review the exam blueprint and the recommended training before trying again. The retake policy requires a waiting period between attempts and payment for each attempt. The exact waiting length and fee amounts are not stated in the specification excerpt, so check the Credentialing Program Guide for current retake terms before scheduling a second attempt.
Turning the blueprint into a study plan
Pair each blueprint domain with a small task in your own training instance. Compare your result with the corresponding official course or product documentation.
The following tasks are study suggestions. Use a training or developer instance you control, record what you changed, and explain the result using official documentation. Let your practice errors and the domain weights guide your next session.
The blueprint recommends Welcome to ServiceNow and ServiceNow Administration Fundamentals. It also points to MeasureUp practice exams through Knowledge Article KB0013408. After a practice question, explain both the correct answer and the alternatives; identify the precise topic you need to revisit.
| Blueprint area | Suggested practice task | Evidence to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Platform and navigation | Locate the features covered in the course and repeat the navigation without notes. | A short route you can explain. |
| Instance configuration | Repeat a course exercise on personalizing the interface or installing a training application. | The relevant settings and what changed. |
| Collaboration | Build a filtered list and configure a form using a course exercise. | Your filter conditions and intended result. |
| Self-service and automation | Work through a Knowledge Management, Service Catalog or Workflow Studio lesson. | The user need, inputs and expected outcome. |
| Database and security | Follow a data-import or access-control lab, then inspect the result. | Your test records and the documented checks. |
| Migration and integration | Repeat a course lab covering update sets, UI Policies, Business Rules or scripting. | The purpose of each change and how you checked it. |
Preparation mistakes to avoid
Check the current blueprint, keep the booking deadline visible, and review the reasons behind missed questions.
An old training outline can omit current topics such as Workflow Studio, Platform Analytics and Security Center. Compare your study plan with the January 2026 blueprint before spending time on material. Avoid using a claimed 70% pass mark or an average of domain scores to decide that you are ready.
Your next steps
Before booking, check that you can complete the exam within the 90-day period and that your practice covers every domain.
- Review unresolved practice errors against official documentation.
- Repeat a hands-on task for each blueprint domain in your training instance.
- Confirm current fees, retake terms and maintenance requirements in the Credentialing Program Guide.
- Choose your delivery format and review its ID and system requirements.
