Identify the credential or maintenance task before choosing what to study. Mainline exams have their own product blueprints; micros assess a narrower topic; suites are awarded when all required component credentials are held, with no extra exam. Mainline holders must complete the required delta maintenance and pay CMP if assessed. A separate 2026 rule requires holders of seven named CIS credentials to earn Data Foundations by December 31.
Mainline, micro, suite and delta: what each means
These four labels describe different credentials or maintenance tasks. Check the exact credential page for its scope, format and requirements.
A mainline certification is a proctored exam on the ServiceNow platform or a specific product, covering roles like System Administrator, Application Developer, and product-specific Implementation Specialist credentials. A micro-certification is a non-proctored assessment of technical skills on a specialty product or outcome, deliberately narrower in scope than a mainline certification.
A suite credential works differently: it combines required mainline certifications, micro-certifications, or accreditations and is awarded automatically once you hold them all — there is no additional exam to sit. A delta maintenance assessment, finally, is the unproctored maintenance exam that keeps an already-earned mainline certification current alongside any applicable annual maintenance fee.
Topics can overlap, but each assessment has its own scope. Record the exact credential name and type, then use its official page to decide what to prepare. For a suite, identify the required component credentials instead of looking for a separate suite exam.
| Type | What it is | Proctored? | How it is maintained |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mainline certification | Broad role or product exam (for example CSA, CAD, CIS-DF) | Yes — Pearson test center or online via OnVUE | Annual CMP fee plus required delta exam for assessed holders |
| Micro-certification | Narrow knowledge checks and practical application assessments on a specialty topic | No | Never expire; complete any added requirement to stay valid |
| Suite credential | Automatic combination of required mainline, micro, and accreditation credentials | No extra exam | Depends on each underlying credential's own status |
| Delta maintenance assessment | Unproctored maintenance exam on what changed | No | Complete the required delta and pay CMP if assessed; follow account instructions. |

Mainline certifications: your blueprint is the source of truth
Mainline exams share a delivery model but differ in length, item types, and domain structure. The two retrieved blueprints prove the point: never assume one exam's format describes another.
Both retrieved blueprints use the same logistics. You register (registration is payment), then have 90 days to schedule and complete the exam at a Pearson test center or online through OnVUE with a webcam proctor. Exam fees are non-refundable, and completing instructor-led training includes one free attempt. Your result appears immediately but is conditional: results can be audited, and a certification can be revoked if security policies were violated.
Question counts, item types and tested domains can differ, as the table shows. For these two exams, each question is worth one point, your total is compared against a predetermined cut score that ServiceNow does not publish and that is not always 70%. The domain percentages on your result report describe performance only — do not average them, and do not treat them as your score.
| Blueprint | Questions | Duration | Item types | Domain structure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Certified Application Developer (CAD) | 60 | 90 minutes | Multiple choice and multiple select (no partial credit) | 6 domains, weighted 20/20/20/20/10/10 |
| CIS – Data Foundations (CMDB and CSDM) | 75 | 90 minutes | Multiple choice, multiple select, drag and drop, scenario-based | 5 domains, weighted 15/19/35/20/11 |

Micro-certifications: narrow scope and no expiry
Micro-certifications verify proficiency on a specific ServiceNow specialty product or outcome through non-proctored knowledge checks and practical application assessments. They never expire, but added requirements must be completed for them to remain valid.
ServiceNow's credentials overview groups micros into areas such as Platform Application Development, Assessment Simulator micros, and Core-Skills suite paths for application and citizen developers. Their scope is deliberately smaller than a mainline certification's, focused on one specified topic.
Two rules matter for planning. First, micro-credentials never expire — but if ServiceNow adds requirements, holders must complete them for the credential to stay valid, so check the credential's page occasionally. Second, because the scope is narrow, prepare from that micro's own stated scope rather than a broader mainline outline; weeks spent on mainline domains the micro never tests is misplaced effort.

Suite credentials: awarded automatically, never by an extra exam
A suite certification is a combination of required mainline certifications, micro-certifications, or accreditations. You earn it automatically by holding every component — no suite exam exists, and completing a learning path page does not award the badge.
The current Workflow Data Fabric Professional suite preview lists five requirements: the Certified System Administrator mainline certification; accreditations in Automation Center Delivery, Process Mining for Platform, and Stream Connect for Apache Kafka; and the Integration Hub micro-certification. Holding the required credentials earns the suite badge.
Two misconceptions to avoid. The learning path overview for this suite is listed at five minutes — that is the reading time for the overview page, not an exam duration. And the page states explicitly that completing that content alone does not provide the suite badge. Plan a suite by listing its required components, marking which you already hold, and dating the gaps; the suite status then follows automatically once the last component lands.

Keeping a mainline current: the CMP fee and delta exams
The standard annual CMP fee is USD 200 plus applicable tax for assessed candidates. It is charged once per person, and paying it is separate from completing required delta exams.
The CMP FAQ covers mainline certification holders and explains that exemptions or company benefits can affect an individual assessment. Check the fee shown in your account and your company affiliation. The payment window typically opens in mid-January and closes in mid-April, but exact dates can change.
Candidates make their own payment by credit card or approved learning credits. Administrators cannot bulk-register or bulk-pay for others, and payments are non-refundable. Eligible credit-card discounts apply at checkout; learning-credit discounts apply at purchase, with no additional CMP discount when the credits are used.
Paying the fee alone does not maintain the credential. Complete the required unproctored delta exam using its own study guide and follow the instructions in your account. Leaving an assessed fee unpaid causes the affected mainline certifications to expire; the FAQ directs those candidates to re-enter the program.

A special 2026 rule: the Data Foundations prerequisite
Separate from routine maintenance: the CIS – Data Foundations (CMDB and CSDM) certification is now a prerequisite for seven IT implementation specialist certifications, and existing holders must pass it by December 31, 2026 or those certifications expire.
The seven affected certifications are CIS – Discovery, Hardware Asset Management, IT Service Management, Service Mapping, Security Incident Response, Software Asset Management, and Vulnerability Response. New candidates on these paths must pass Data Foundations before registering for any of the seven. If you already hold one, you have until December 31, 2026; after that, an unmet prerequisite means the certification expires and you would need to pass both Data Foundations and the specialist exam again.
Existing holders of one or more of the seven affected certifications can register for a free first Data Foundations attempt through December 31, 2026. A normal registration gives 90 days to schedule and complete the exam, but preserving an affected existing credential still requires earning Data Foundations by December 31. An appointment in 2027 does not extend that deadline.
Also label these as ended: the free Data Foundations offer for all candidates (through June 30, 2026) and the temporary prerequisite suspension (through January 31, 2026) no longer apply. One broader change does help everyone — ServiceNow no longer requires completing the associated training course before taking a certification exam; it remains recommended, but knowledgeable candidates can skip the course while still satisfying any certification prerequisite.
Worked example: one candidate's maintenance picture
A single worked case shows how the fee rule, the micro rule, and the prerequisite rule interact for one candidate. All premises are stated so the answer is determined.
This kind of case is worth doing on paper before your own maintenance window opens, because the three rules are easy to conflate: the CMP fee is per person, the micro rule is about expiry, and the prerequisite rule is a dated transition requirement on top of routine maintenance.
Worked example
Paper case: Priya holds CIS-ITSM and two micro-certifications, has not passed Data Foundations, and is assessed the standard USD 200 CMP fee for 2026. Assume no exemption or discount; tax, if applicable, is additional. (a) Is CMP charged once or separately for each credential? (b) Do the micros each require a CMP payment? (c) What must she complete for ITSM maintenance, what extra deadline applies to Data Foundations, and which first-attempt offer can she use?
Show the answer
(a) CMP is charged once: USD 200 plus applicable tax under the stated assumptions. (b) There is no separate CMP charge for either micro; they remain subject to any added requirements. (c) Priya must complete the required ITSM delta maintenance and earn Data Foundations by December 31, 2026. Existing holders of CIS-ITSM qualify for a free first Data Foundations attempt if registered by that date, but she must also pass by December 31 to retain ITSM. A later appointment does not extend the deadline.
The CMP FAQ states the fee is assessed only once per candidate regardless of the number of certifications held, and that it applies to professionals holding a high-stakes (mainline) certification — which covers her ITSM credential but not her micros. The credentials overview confirms micro-credentials never expire, subject only to any added requirements. The prerequisite article lists CIS – ITSM among the seven certifications that require Data Foundations, sets the December 31, 2026 deadline for existing holders, and describes the free first-attempt registration offer for holders who register by that date. Finally, both mainline blueprints state that maintaining the certification means completing the annual delta exam alongside any applicable CMP fee — the fee opens access, but the delta completes the maintenance.

Preparation checklist and where to verify
Your plan is sound when you can name each credential's type, its own format facts, and its maintenance rule — with dates. Verify everything against ServiceNow's official pages, which govern over any summary including this one.
Blueprint sub-topic lists are explicitly not exhaustive, so treat them as coverage maps rather than complete question inventories. Exam questions are drawn from official ServiceNow training materials, product documentation, and the developer site; ServiceNow warns that study materials posted elsewhere online are not official.
- Name the exact credential and its type (mainline, micro, suite component, or delta) before studying anything.
- Open that credential's own exam specification and note its question count, duration, item types, and domain weights.
- For a micro, prepare within that micro's stated scope, not a broader mainline outline.
- For a suite, list every required underlying credential, mark what you hold, and date the gaps.
- If you hold an affected CIS credential without Data Foundations, plan to pass by December 31, 2026; check eligibility for the free first-attempt offer.
- Check the CMP and delta instructions in your account; pay the fee if assessed and complete the required maintenance.
